Dr. Mark W. Poland

Richmond Concert Band is honored to have such a distinguished and able a music director as Dr. Mark Poland. His musical expertise enriches the band in many ways.  His conducting skills, music selection, and guidance have helped forge our image in the musical community and in the community at large.
Mark received B.A. from the College of William and Mary, his M.S. from Virginia State University, and his Ed.D. from William and Mary.

He has served as junior high and high school band director in Hampton, Colonial Heights, and Chesterfield County.
He has been guest director at numerous concerts and adjudicator at area band competitions. He is a member of MENC and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Mark is the creator and festival director for the "Musical Mondays at Maymont" series now in its eighth year.

While successful in a management career apart from music, he continues to distinguish himself as the Music Director of the Richmond Concert Band Society. He has served for twenty-three of  the thirty years the band has been entertaining the community.

Mark is a friend and fellow to the band members, at the same time being the musical leader, critic, and organizer.  This is a hard job to keep these potentially conflicting roles going, but he seems to hit the right balance with his personal style.
