Welcome to
The Richmond Concert Band
The
Richmond
Concert Band, is a diverse but united adult
community band whose mission is
to perform free concerts for the citizens of the
metropolitan Richmond area, and to provide a quality
and challenging performing experience for local
musicians of all ages. Concerts are presented
year-round with the summer/outdoor season opening at
Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens on the Saturday/day
before Easter. The band also performs 4 or 5 indoor
Christmas Concert in December in different parts of
the metro area, someplace convenient for most
everyone. Other indoor concerts are also performed
on occasion.
We are a symphonic band
with an amazing roster of over 100 musicians ranging
in age from 17 to 83 years of age. Each concert
features 60 to 90 of these musicians from all walks
of life. Members of the Richmond Concert
Band are amateur and semi-professional musicians who
enjoy making music as part of a concert band.
The
Richmond Concert Band has enjoyed the privilege of
performing under the direction of two well known
guest conductors – composer/arranger Warren Barker
and John Philip Sousa, IV, the great-grandson of
Mr. Sousa. In 1996 Mr. Barker was
commissioned to write a piece in celebration of
the band's 25th anniversary. This composition,
Capitol Square
March, was published by Warner Bros
and was bought and performed by concert bands
all over the country!
Formed in 1971, we are the oldest active community band in the Richmond metropolitan area and have 12-15 performances each year. We strive to be “The Band of Choice”; the choice for musicians, event planners, and audiences alike. Under the direction of Mark W. Poland since February 1979, the band offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, all the while striving for the highest level of musicianship.
The band rehearses Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church in the Fan. Membership is open to anyone who plays a band instrument and wants to be a part of an adult concert band. Auditions are not required. Join us and experience the joy of making music!
Friends of the Band
Our Friends of the Band newsletter, Grace Notes, is published quarterly and contains information on the band's history, current events, and future goals. It also includes a calendar of upcoming concerts and a message from our music director. Our "friends" also receive a postcard (suitable for posting on the refrigerator) announcing each concert. We hope you will be interested in joining our mailing list. It's the best way to keep in-the-know. The easiest and cheapest method of contact is by e-mail. It is our promise that you will not receive any junk e-mails; just the newsletters and concert announcements. Anyone wishing to be added, please send an email to the Band.
